Abortions After the First Trimester Drop 69% in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska’s law protecting unborn babies in the second and third trimesters is constitutional and will remain in effect based on a decision issued by the state Supreme Court this morning.
According to 2023 data released by Nebraska’s Health and Human Services Department which contains abortion numbers from January through December of last year, there was a 9% decrease in abortions and 69% drop in abortions after 12 weeks last year. Gov. Jim Pillen signed the state’s 12-week pro-life bill into law in May of 2023 which went into effect immediately.
SBA Pro-Life America Western Regional Director Adam Schwend celebrated the court’s decision:
“This decision is a victory for Nebraska’s unborn children and their mothers who will continue to be protected from second- and third-trimester abortions. Our state saw a massive drop in late-term abortions last year thanks to the Let Them Grow Act. We must continue to guard this protection that prevents abortions of babies who can feel pain and stand firm against the abortion industry’s attempts to roll back the progress we have made in the greatest human rights struggle of our time.”
By 12 weeks’ gestation, all major organs have formed. At this stage, babies suck their thumbs and already have a right-hand or left-hand preference. Prominent facial features including the nose, cheeks, eyes and ears are recognizable; teeth are developing; and the body responds to touch.” For more information on fetal development, see Charlotte Lozier Institute’s “12 Facts at 12 Weeks.”
According to a poll from 2023, 72% of Nebraskans reject unlimited abortion.
