No sooner did President Biden say in an interview released on Wednesday that he would re-evaluate whether to stay in the presidential race if a doctor told him directly that he had a medical condition that made that necessary than we learned that President Biden had Covid. But wait! That can’t be. Isn’t he the guy who assured us that vaccination guaranteed complete protection Yes, he is, but that is a subject for another day. Today’s subject is Biden’s possible withdrawal from the 2024 race for the presidency.
Events are moving in that direction. Indeed, they are reaching a fever pitch. To borrow a familiar metaphor that might actually apply, the walls are closing in around Biden.
Yesterday the shiftless Adam Schiff — an ally of Nancy Pelosi — called for Biden to quit the race. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has ruminated along these lines and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has Schuminated to the same effect, both directly with Biden.
A new Associated Press poll shows Democrats want Biden out. The DNC has pushed the virtual roll call nomination date back. Donors have let it be known that it’s time for Biden to go. A rough Pelosian beast slouches toward Biden to give him a shove.
The Democrats have heretofore covered for a patently incompetent Biden. The chances that Biden would serve out a second term if reelected range from zero to zero. They denied it and asserted that all was well — until Biden’s leadership threatened their own phony baloney jobs. Now it’s time for him to go. They all deserve each other as well as our utmost contempt.
If Democrats swap Biden out — it has to be you, Kamala Harris. God save us.
It seems to me that Harris will nevertheless give Democrats a boost. The race remains close even with Biden shuffling around and looking for the way off the stage. Biden’s visible debility has not boosted President Trump over the ceiling that limits his support. As a candidate, Harris will enjoy a media honeymoon and susceptible voters will breathe a sigh of relief that Biden is on his way out. Harris herself can enlist a vice presidential candidate who will do more for her than she has ever done for Biden.
The debate that triggered these events took place on June 27 — only three weeks ago. The developments above — have taken place over the past few days. It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future. At this point one can only express the hope that conservatives and Republicans are not overconfident about the challenge that lies before us.
