This afternoon I recorded a podcast with David Zimmer, public safety policy fellow at American Experiment. As a Captain in the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, David has participated in security at three presidential inaugurations in Washington, D.C., leading a team of 40 to 45 officers from his department. He has also worked with the Secret Service to provide security for more than a dozen presidential visits to Minnesota. So he has a great deal of experience, specifically with regard to working with the Secret Service on presidential protection.

David and I walked through the presidential security process, in the context of Trump’s Pennsylvania event. We talked about the facts as they are so far known, and about the almost incredible security breach that allowed Thomas Crooks to be on top of a building with line of sight to a presidential nominee, with a rifle. (David, by the way, is an excellent shot and has a professional understanding of rifle fire, both amateur and sniper.) We talked, too, about the key unknowns: what should we be looking for as more information about the incident comes to light?

I think this is the best-informed discussion of Saturday’s assassination attempt that you are likely to hear. This is the video; weirdly, our camera malfunctioned so it’s basically audio with captions:
