At a rally in Pensylvania, someone evidently fired several shots at Donald Trump. The apparent assassination attempt almost succeeded, as Trump seems to have been hit in the ear:

No word yet on the perpetrator. This is potentially a huge story, obviously, and could shake up the political landscape. For now, thank God he doesn’t seem to be seriously hurt.

Updates to follow.

UPDATE: Video:

An obvious question? Why doesn’t anyone behind Trump appear to be hit? [Update: It is being reported that a couple of people in the bleachers were wounded. Later: one is now reported to have died.]

MORE: The would-be assassin is reported to be dead:

I have seen no further word on the attacker at this time.

STEVE adds: Remember when the media blamed Sarah Palin for the Gabby Giffords shooting in 2011? Let’s see how the media spins this:

JOHN adds: This is the first I have seen about the shooter’s identity. No idea whether it is correct, but the source seems respectable. However, the earlier report was that the shooter was dead, now he is said to be under arrest:

It is a good reminder that early reports on violent incidents are always, in some respects, wrong.

MORE: The Associated Press is reporting that the would-be assassin is dead, so the Antifa report above seems to be at least partly wrong. [UPDATE: That tweet has now been deleted.]

STEVE adds: “Loud noises.” You may think you hate the media, but you don’t hate them enough.

MORE: This BBC interview is with a guy who says he saw the shooter from outside the security perimeter. He says the assassin was on a roof with a rifle, and he and his friends tries to call the man to the attention of the police and Secret Service. He says the Secret Service shot the man and killed him:

I don’t know, I used to make my living in part by evaluating the reliability of witnesses. This guy seems credible to me. But we will see.

UPDATE: Here is an interview with an ER doctor who tried to help one of the people in the crowd who were shot:

ANOTHER: Democrats are responding to the assassination attempt with their usual class:

Dave Portnoy asks: Where is Joe Biden? As of this moment, he still has not been heard from. Maybe they are trying to wake him up:

STILL MORE: Sean Davis, generally a good source, says the Trump campaign has had trouble getting security from the Biden administration. I have no opinion on this. I would note, however, that the Biden Administration has made a point of not providing security to RFK, Jr.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Everything I hear makes me think the guy interviewed by the BBC was telling the truth. It is now being reported that the attempted assassin used an “AR-15 style” rifle. That makes sense, as observers said the shots seemed to come from a small-caliber firearm. And you wouldn’t have been able to get a rifle past security, so it had to be outside the perimeter. The shooter came within an inch of assassinating Donald Trump.

NEXT: President Trump has released this statement:

A little while ago, Joe Biden bestirred himself to make a plain-vanilla statement opposing political assassination. Brave stand, Joe. The contrast between the sad shadow of a president and Donald Trump, pumping his fist while he was bleeding from an assassination attempt, is too obvious to require comment.

Liberals are such wonderful people:

The guy interviewed by the BBC was telling it straight. This is a photo of Secret Service officers having just killed the perpetrator on a rooftop a hundred yards or so away from the podium:

In days to come, I will have some thoughts about the ability of an assassin to get on top of a building within a short distance–with a rifle, 100 yards is an absurdly short distance–from a presidential candidate.
