Kamala Harris raised eyebrows with her recent appearance at the BET Awards, drawing criticism for what Complex called a “cringe as hell” attempt to connect with Black voters.

During an interview with actress Taraji P. Henson, Harris remarked, “Yeah girl, I’m out here in these streets. And let me tell you, you’re right, Taraji. There is so much at stake in this moment. The majority of us believe in freedom and equality. But these extremists, as they say, they not like us,” referencing rapper Kendrick Lamar’s ‘diss track’ to Canadian rapper Drake, ‘Not Like Us.’

Complex magazine didn’t hold back, describing her move as “unflinchingly corny” and drawing parallels to past episodes involving 2016 Democratic presidential loser Hillary Clinton.

Comparing Harris to Clinton, the magazine commented, “If Hillary Clinton is the Ken Griffey Jr. of pandering, then it looks like Kamala is becoming the Barry Bonds of it.”

Jayson Buford, a journalist with a hip-hop publication, criticized Clinton’s pandering to Black voters, noting that it fell short in addressing significant issues within the community. He implied that Harris may face similar challenges, highlighting Clinton’s failure to connect with voters as a cautionary tale.

“The true humiliation of attempting to garner votes she didn’t deserve was what caused Clinton’s eventual downfall in the election,” wrote Buford. Incorporating an analogy, he hinted at the challenge facing Harris in securing support from the Black community due to her track record as a former district attorney.

Regarding the Harris’s accusation against GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump of instituting a nationwide abortion ban, users on social media labeled the claim as misinformation, further questioning the Vice President’s credibility.

The reaction to Harris’s appearance at the BET Awards and her statements reflect an increasing skepticism among some voters toward her attempts to connect with specific demographics. This critique comes amid ongoing debates within the political landscape, signaling potential challenges for the Vice President as the next election approaches.
