If polling is any indication, only one Democrat looks to be a viable replacement for President Joe Biden, but the whereabouts of another former first lady remained notably unaccounted for.

Those on the left who’d thus far resisted surrendering to spin had a new reason to tell Joe it was time to go as post-debate metrics painted a bleak picture for the incumbent. Of course, according to the newest Reuters/Ipsos poll, it wasn’t encouraging to the right either as former First Lady Michelle Obama stood head and shoulders above the competition.

Conducted between July 1-2, 892 registered voters were polled on hypothetical matchups between former President Donald Trump and prominent Democrats. Out of the current administration and Govs. Andy Beshear (KY), Gavin Newsom (CA), J.B. Pritzker (IL), and Gretchen Whitmer (MI), not a single one topped the GOP leader who maintained support between 40-43% except when pitted against Michelle Obama.

In that matchup, with a margin of error of 3.2%, the former president landed at 39% against the former first lady’s 50%.

Making matters worse, Trump’s deficit was not to be overcome by merely swaying the undecided as the remaining registered voters split their choice rather evenly between selecting another candidate, waiting to make up their minds, or skipping the election outright.

Of course, notably absent from the poll while remaining in the spotlight at the Tony Awards and with a conveniently-timed book release slated for the height of election season in the fall, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton went unnamed in the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Likewise, she and fellow former First Lady Obama were kept off a CNN/SRRS poll that showed Trump beating Vice President Kamala Harris 47-45%, Whitmer 47-43%, and Newsom 48-43% that concluded without a viable alternative to the Republican being named.

Recently, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) had re-upped his position that Obama would be the most likely nominee to replace Biden in the increasingly likely scenario that he gets bumped ahead of the Nov. 5 election, “I believe the odds have now skyrocketed; I believe the odds are north of 80 percent that the Democrat Party will remove Joe Biden from the ticket and replace him. And I believe they are likely to replace Joe Biden with Michelle Obama because Biden did so disastrously badly tonight that Democrats across the country are in utter freefall and complete panic.”

That said, Amy Curtis from Twitchy contended that polls that are mum on Clinton could be intentional because “the longer her name is out there as a potential candidate, the less likable and less electable she becomes. So it would not surprise me at all for the Clinton camp to sit back and wait until the last possible second, then swoop in as the savior of the Democratic Party.”

“After eight years as first lady, and a stint as senator and Secretary of State, the people know Hillary Clinton,” she said, “And they don’t like what they see.”

Be it Biden, Harris, Obama, or Clinton, pearl-clutching is likely to remain a central focus of the left’s campaign and Curtis suggested Trump ought to counter abortion narratives by “hammering home the Democrats’ capitulation to the trans cult — and especially Biden’s gutting of Title IX.”

“Suburban moms and single women may lean Democratic, but they also won’t like the thought of their private spaces, their sports, and their academic and athletic opportunities being usurped by men,” she added.
