The only weird thing here is the Jason mask.

Santa Rosa police officers stopped the driver of a gold Toyota Camry around 9:40 p.m. for having his headlights or taillights off, according to a news release.

The driver, 27-year-old Adonay Efriem of Santa Rosa, was wearing a hockey goalie‘s mask similar to the type worn by the serial-killing character Jason in the “Friday the 13th” films, according to police. Officers noticed he was “sweating profusely” and that an AR-15-style rifle was in the backseat, partially covered by a blanket.

The guy in this story was wearing a hockey mask, Lord knows why, but the LA Times made sure to describe him as “sweating profusely” (because no one is ever nervous during a traffic stop), and noted that he had a gun in the backseat that was “partially covered by a blanket.”

Police allege that the gun — an Eagle Arms Eagle-15 5.56-millimeter semiautomatic rifle — was an illegal, unregistered weapon, though it was not loaded, they noted. Efriem was arrested on suspicion of possession of an assault weapon and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.

“Arrested on suspicion of possession of an assault weapon.”

This guy was driving with a hockey mask on, so maybe he really is a lunatic criminal. I’m glad the police pulled him over, if only for the fact that he was driving without headlights and/or taillights.

But here’s the thing Californians probably don’t realize:

Most Americans can buy this exact rifle and drive around with it in their backseat without any issue.

In some states, only those with concealed carrier licenses can drive with a loaded gun, requiring non-license holders to carry ammo and weapons in separate bags, but no one is getting arrested because they are in “possession of an assault weapon.”

Let’s look at the boomstick in this article.

Eagle Arms is a branch of ArmaLite, the developer of the Armalite Rifle 15 (AR-15) in 1950s. ArmaLite sold the rights to the platform to Colt, which went on to use the AR-15 design to mass produce M16s, and later, M4s, for the U.S. military. It is America’s gun, just like the AK is Russia’s gun. Tens of millions of these AR-15 variants are owned across America.

The Eagle-15 is meant to be an affordable AR that costs just over $500.

There’s no full-auto option on this thing. It’s not a machine gun. It’s a semi-automatic weapon that fires one round per trigger pull. This technology is older than the automobile.

The gun in this California arrest uses that same 1880s design to reload itself, but it doesn’t continuously fire, so it isn’t a machine gun.

You’ll notice it’s missing a stock, which is something gun owners will remove (or replace with a pistol brace) so they avoid the ATF’s $200 tax stamp. Therefore, I’d guess it is likely registered as a semi-auto pistol (yes, removing a stock or a vertical foregrip magically changes a gun from a rifle to a pistol, according to the ATF!).

Millions of Americans carry these AR pistols as “truck guns” or “backpack guns.” These are the guns you don’t carry with you when you’re in the grocery store, but you keep close at hand if you need to take out a mass shooter in a food court or put down a coyote that’s bothering your sheep.

Other than that, this guy has a bit of money to spend, because he’s got an EOTECH holographic sight (those things are pricey!) with a co-witnessing magnifier on his Picatinny rail.

Like I said, the real headline here is “Man wearing hockey mask pulled over for driving with no headlights.” We can all see the Jason joke there.

But the fact that this guy had a semi-auto AR pistol in his backseat? Not newsworthy at all … unless you live in a backwards state like California.
