A conveniently-timed campaign event sparked further talk that President Joe Biden was yesterday’s news as one governor packed his bags for New Hampshire.

Whether or not the party chose to accept it, the incumbent’s debate performance stirred concerns from the Left that their feeble folly had finally failed. Now, after standing as one of the staunchest supporters of Biden, allying himself throughout the campaign and in the post-debate spin room, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was slated to headline a fundraising campaign event in the Granite State.

“We look forward to welcoming Governor Newsom to New Hampshire to campaign on behalf of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as we work to once again defeat Donald Trump,” New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley said in a statement to the Concord Monitor.

“Trump has grown increasingly unhinged in his campaign for power,” argued the longtime official who added, “It’s never been more important to mobilize Democrats across the state to defeat him and re-elect our President, Joe Biden, who has consistently fought for and delivered for New Hampshire.”

Making note of the timing of the pre-scheduled event, New England College President Wayne Lesperance told the Monitor, “While it may have been planned prior to last week’s debate, Gov. Newsom’s visit to the Granite State will surely fuel speculation about replacing President Biden on the presidential ballot. And while he may be here to stump for the President and down-ballot [D]emocrats, he is sure to get just as many questions about his own presidential ambitions.”

After Thursday’s debate, Newsom was among the few campaign surrogates who had braved the spin room to gaslight tens of millions of people that the train wreck they’d just witnessed wasn’t cause for alarm.

“I will never turn my back on President Biden and I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so. And especially after tonight. We have his back,” he said in his remarks as well as, “I have no trepidation.”

He also said when asked specifically about taking the incumbent’s place as the nominee, “It’s a non sequitur. I don’t even understand that.”

“This is a president of the United States running for re-election. He’s our guy. And that’s part of the diversion tactic of the right — to continue to sort of muddy the waters on all of that and that nonsensical speculations. It’s just like the absurdity of who’s going to get an injection shot. I mean this is farcical. It’s serious stuff — democracy, freedom, liberty, rights,” he rattled off before suggesting, “And to see it trivialized, as we’re trivializing it even having these conversations, is really distressing to me as an American citizen, not just as a Democrat.”

Meanwhile, Newsom had his own debate disaster to account for after he was trounced by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) in a head-to-head matchup in November where the Golden State politician’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, had reportedly pulled the plug despite both executives agreeing to continue past the allotted time.

“But it’s about the United States of America, I thought this guy was running for president of the United States,” Newsom attempted to retort after moderator Sean Hannity interjected over the governor shilling for the Biden administration with the question, “Is Joe Biden paying you tonight? I thought this was state vs. state.”

Firing back, DeSantis leveled, “You are too, you just won’t admit it — you won’t admit it. You will not admit it. Why don’t you just admit that you’re running?”

Regarding campaigning in New Hampshire, the Monitor did note that other notable Democrats had passed through during the 2024 presidential cycle, suggesting that they were laying the groundwork for a 2028 bid. Included among them were, “Democratic Govs. Tim Walz of Minnesota and J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota — who ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination — and Rep. Ro Khanna of California.”
