The U.S. men’s national team had an opportunity to start building momentum with a strong run in the Copa America with the 2026 World Cup coming down the pike. Instead, we were met with yet another Gregg Berhalter masterclass as the USMNT couldn’t even manage to get out of the group stage in the tournament being held on American soil.

The USMNT fell to Uruguay 1-0 on Monday night in what turned into a must-win game as Panama – which upset the U.S. the week prior – beat Bolivia to punch its ticket to the knockout round.

The loss to Uruguay and the far-too-early exit from the tournament was the same old, same old from the U.S. side. You had Berhalter incapable of making any meaningful adjustments from a tactical standpoint and the ‘golden generation’ of players on the field doing absolutely nothing in the attacking half. Uruguay was undoubtedly the USMNT’s toughest opponent in the group stage, but for the team to barely show a pulse in the second half of a do-or-die contest was unacceptable.

While the players deserve plenty of criticism and the overall roster needs a shakeup, the majority of the finger-pointing going on needs to be directed at Berhalter.

We’re well past the point of looking at him coaching the team out of the group stage in the 2022 World Cup as some sort of feat. The only thing that matters now is results on the field and building something of significance ahead of 2026, when the World Cup comes to North America in what will be the greatest opportunity in the history of United States soccer.

Berhalter has given fans zero reason to believe that he’s a guy who can take this team beyond the levels of previous teams. If you remove Mexico from the equation, Berhalter is 0-5-5 against Top 15 teams in the FIFA world rankings as the USMNT manager.

Plenty of fans have been calling for his job since after the 2022 World Cup, but after the embarrassing efforts in the Copa America, the shouts have never been louder.

Berhalter attempted to thank U.S. supporters following the 1-0 loss to Uruguay in Kansas City and was met with a barrage of boos.

As for the fans who had already made their way to the exits at Arrowhead Stadium, they were chanting ‘Fire Gregg’ as they made their way out.

The U.S. Soccer Federation had multiple reasons to let Berhalter walk back in 2022 with his contract expiring and later discovered that he kicked his future wife in the legs outside of a bar back in 1992. The federation began a search for a new manager and dragged its feet for far too long just to bring Berhalter back for a second stint.

Everyone who had been paying any attention at all knew Berhalter coming back was nothing but a giant waste of time, and that reality came to fruition on Monday night.
