One of the industry’s leading political handicappers says that President Joe Biden’s already sinking poll numbers took another hit after his dismal debate performance against former President Donald Trump on Thursday.

“[We’ve] got a string of polls in late this afternoon, they’re mostly poor for Joe Biden, and they’re beginning to have a bigger impact on the model,” Nate Silver wrote in Monday’s forecast. “Trump now leads by 2.7 points in our national average. And Biden’s win probability has dropped to 28 percent from 35 percent on debate night.”

“Our guess is that more likely than not, there’s some further decline ahead: the model is trying to figure out whether this is random noise, but instead it’s almost certainly caused by a challenging first debate for Biden. It’s not great news for the president,” he added.

Biden has been behind Trump in Silver’s forecast model since April.

“Biden just hit a new all-time low in approval (37.4%) at 538 yesterday. Dropping out would be a big risk. But there’s some threshold below which continuing to run is a bigger risk,” said Silver last month. “Are we there yet? I don’t know. But it’s more than fair to ask.”

According to a CBS News/YouGov poll released on Sunday, a staggering 72 percent of Americans believe that Biden does not have the “mental and cognitive health to serve as president.” This marks a 7-point increase from just three weeks ago. In comparison, voters are evenly divided on whether former President Donald Trump has the mental and cognitive capacity for the job, with 50 percent saying he does and 49 percent saying he does not.

According to the survey, an overwhelming number of Americans, including almost half of his own party, believe that the president should not run for reelection. Overall, 72 percent of respondents told CBS/You Gov that Biden should not seek reelection, and this includes a surprising 46 percent of Democrats.

Over the weekend, Biden huddled with his family to discuss his future. While many on the left are calling for him to drop out, that isn’t likely to happen.

“Biden’s family, including First Lady Jill Biden, son Hunter Biden, and their grandchildren, convened at Camp David for a previously scheduled get-together and implored the president to keep fighting in his bid for reelection, Biden advisers told CNN. One adviser described the family members as offering their ‘unequivocal support,’” CNN reported.

“The family – clearly frustrated with the team that prepared President Biden ahead of his alarming debate with former President Donald Trump – discussed whether any of Biden’s top advisers should be fired and whether campaign staffing changes should be made, one adviser said,” the outlet added.

CNN added: “Biden and his family convened Sunday for a long-planned photo shoot with renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. Senior advisers had insisted to CNN on Saturday that the gathering was not aimed at discussing whether the president would remain in the race. Angst toward some of Biden’s key staff members has started to spill out into public view. Florida attorney John Morgan, one of the Democratic Party’s most prolific and prominent donors, singled out senior adviser Anita Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, who is Biden’s personal attorney.”

Biden’s family convinced him to remain in the race, but according to former Fox News star Tucker Carlson, it might not have been a popular decision with all of them. Posting on X, he said an “unusually good source” told him that former President Barack Obama is growing disillusioned about Biden’s chances in November, citing a growing rift between both families.

He added that Obama is privately sharing his concerns with allies. He admitted that Biden “can’t win” and has not yet been honest with his former vice president about his true feelings.

“Relations between the Obamas and the Bidens have never been warm. At times they’ve been hostile. But recently they’ve deteriorated further, mostly due to Jill Biden,” he wrote. In the hours and days after the debate, she kept her husband cloistered away from anyone who might convince him to drop out,” Carlson continued. “Jill Biden is the driving force behind her husband’s reelection campaign, just as she was in 2020, when other members of the family (including Biden’s sister Val) considered him too impaired to run.
