Do not lose world ranking points this week

Fair warning.

The last thing you should be doing on Thursday night is laying stripes while people all around you are throwing parties and blowing up fireworks. Take a break. Be smart. Don’t be like the neighbor kid who started mowing this morning at 7:45 a.m.

Have some sense this week.

Smoltz is onto something

– Kurt emails:

I think Smoltz is on to something, but I’d like to add to the conversation. I’m not basing this on any scientific study or anything, but stay with me. It’s crazy to me that coaches (not all of them) will keep kids on a pitch count and a lot of leagues, including high school and little league, enforce a strict pitch count rule. They claim it’s for player safety, but then they expect them to spend the whole year working on baseball, focusing on just the one sport. It’s my theory that spending the whole year on baseball instead of taking a break and playing other sports is also contributing to arm injuries. I think playing other sports and working out other muscles contributes to preventing injuries. This is mostly from my own experience and observations, but I think it’s worth looking into.

On another note, I coached my kindergartener in T-ball this year, and it’s a joy to see as the season goes on that some of the players actually understand how to get an out and try to do it. It’s awesome when the kids actually learn something about baseball even though there’s not really any rules in T-ball.

Kinsey:

Well said, Kurt, about the kids understanding the game by the end of the year. I had an 11 year old make a play last week down the third baseline on a slow grounder where he bobbled the ball, stayed with it, and made a big throw to first and got the out. These kids don’t need to travel four hours from home and stay in Hampton Inns to get baseball.

They just need to keep at it and to be encouraged to get better, be competitive and have fun.

I’ll say what the old timers around here told me last year as I was enjoying the success of the kids: Keep it up, coach. You’re making a difference.

The greatest parking spots of your life

– Bruce B. in Decatur, IL remembers a parking spot:

Back in 2010 I bought tickets for Chicago and the Doobie Brothers at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre west of St. Louis to celebrate our anniversary (Chicago is her all-time favorite band). Nabbed a hotel nearby that had a shuttle that would take us to Verizon, so no need to park- or so I thought. We went down to the lobby early to get the shuttle over and found that it was busy ferrying aircrews over to Lambert and that it would be at least an hour before they would be able to take us.

There was also an older couple with a very young, dark-haired guy looking very nervous and imploring the staff that they needed to get shuttled to the concert.  We struck up a conversation and learned that we had just met the opening act!  A young Italian crooner named Niko and his producer/manager and the manager’s wife.

I quickly offered to drive them over and they quickly agreed and said they will help us get better tickets (we had GA lawn seats).  On the drive we learn that his manager is none other than Steve Binder, the legendary producer most famous for the 1968 Elvis TV Comeback Special, and many other specials and shows for many decades.

His wife and my wife were both teachers, so they hit it off right away.  Steve helped guide us thru security and we parked right next to the tour buses.  We walked in to backstage, were promptly gifted with backstage passes along with reserved seats in the 4th row center stage.  Before Niko took the stage Steve and his wife took us out to the stage so that we could see what the artists see when they walk out.

Tremendous!

After Niko’s set we met them all again on the side of the stage at his merch table, where I verified with Steve that they had a ride back and we would be free to head back to the hotel whenever we wanted.  More conversation and then hearty Thank Yous to some of the nicest folks we’ve met. After a great concert, we went backstage, said our Thank yous to the band and crew, and headed back to the hotel.

I mentioned to my wife that I had no idea how I would ever top that night as an anniversary gift.  Best Parking Spot Ever.

Costco shorts really are great

Hans in Arizona on fashion:

These shorts are amazing! So comfy and lightweight. Wanted to highly recommend them to the Screencaps faithful out there. Keep up the good work.

Kinsey:

Well said, Hans. I have several pairs of the Greg Norman Costco shorts in my rotation. In fact, I spent eight hours on Sunday working around the yard in Greg Norman’s shorts. They’re versatile, fit great and I can golf in them.

Is this the perfect TNML bar?

– Kevin in Gibsonia shares:

I may have found the perfect bar for TNML.

Kinsey:

Kevin didn’t provide details, but I believe this is Jason Aldean’s Kitchen bar in Nashville. I’d have a drink there. Personally, I think the perfect TNML bar is on a body of water with great air flow, very few walls and not a bunch of concrete.

Corvettes out and about

Remember when we’d check in with lumber prices?

– Mike T. in Eagle, Idaho shared this headline:

Don’t try this at home

Take the death dives out of the equation, this looks like the kind of float party I want to experience. Stick with the video until you see the third dive attempt. The guy is nuts.

How to cook corn in milk

– Jim M. writes:

Hey Joe, the article says this a thing in the Midwest? Is it good? Corn season coming soon and something new is welcomed. Thanks Joe

Kinsey:

I’ve lived here in the Midwest for all but four years of my life and I’ve never heard of such a thing. Perhaps this is something they do in Iowa and it never made its way to Ohio.

I’m going to need someone to step up and tell us how this corn technique actually tastes.

And we’re done with the first Screencaps of July. Don’t forget, the Tour de France started, which means you’ll have something to watch this week when it’s hot as hell and you need a break from drinking and swimming.

Go have a great day. Good luck getting anything done at work this week.
