On Monday, the Mets were rocked by a surprising medical emergency for outfielder Brandon Nimmo. 

What started as stomach pain turned into a major question mark for the healthy Nimmo. Early Monday morning, Nimmo abruptly fainted in his hotel room in Washington D.C. — suffering a gash on his forehead. He’s in better spirits since but will not be available to play against the Nats.

Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza gave the status update to reporters Monday afternoon. Nimmo also spoke to the media, unable to explain what led to his fainting.

“I think we got lucky there,” Mendoza said. The manager added that Nimmo was evaluated for a concussion, which came back negative.

Nimmo shared with reporters that he underwent a CT scan and additional tests but could not pinpoint a catalyst. It was an unfortunate scratch for Nimmo on Monday, which marked the eighth anniversary of his first MLB home run.

Nimmo explicitly mentioned not downing any alcohol before fainting. He played in Sunday’s 10-5 defeat to the Houston Astros that went into extra innings. He went 3 of 4 with a homer and three runs batted in. Approaching the medical scare with some levity, Nimmo joked that it gave him a striking resemblance to Harry Potter.

It’s been a rough 24 hours for the New York Mets, coming down to earth (a bit) off their big, Grimace-fueled June.

The team looks to have Nimmo back soon to hopefully resume its red-hot play. The Mets went 16-8 in June, unintentionally sparking a sensation around a supernatural winning streak, headlined by Grimace. 

Grimace, the purple McDonald’s character, changed the Mets’ fortunes after throwing the first pitch on June 12. After that pitch, the Mets went on a seven-game winning streak and welcomed a small new wave of Mets fans cheering on the team for their connection to the purple blob cartoon character.

The Mets and general manager David Stearns brace for a vital MLB trade deadline in which the Mets could be serious sellers or buyers. New York remains on the cusp of the NL wild-card race, sitting two games behind.

Nimmo is slashing .291/.376/.521 with a .897 OPS.
