A newly released study by Arizona State University reveals that a Biden-era “woke” military policy is dramatically harming the U.S. armed forces at a time of increasing instability in the world.

The study found that Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs implemented during President Biden’s term are having a negative impact on recruiting, readiness, and morale. The study conducted by the university’s Center for American Institutions argued that there is an emphasis on training new soldiers about social issues such as “unconscious bias” and “intersectionality” in a manner that the center believes goes against typical American ideals. The study explored DEI plans in various sectors of the military, including DEI office staffing and education at academies like West Point, The Center Square reported, citing the study.

“The massive DEI bureaucracy, its training and its pseudo-scientific assessments are at best distractions that absorb valuable time and resources,” says the executive summary of the study. “At worst they communicate the opposite of the military ethos: e.g. that individual demographic differences come before team and mission.”

Donald Critchlow, the center’s director, noted in the study’s introduction that the research aimed to examine the impact of Critical Race Theory on the training programs of the United States Armed Forces.

“The Commission on Civic Education in the Military began as a project to review civic education in the military. Our research team did not expect to find Critical Race Theory so embedded and pervasive. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs are found throughout the U.S. Armed Forces and our service academies,” he wrote. “This year long study documents just how pervasive these training programs are in our Armed Forces and Service Academies and that DEI extends well beyond just formal training programs in the military and service academies.”

“The Founders of our nation understood and feared a politicized military. History had shown them that a politicized army easily became the tool of tyranny. The Armed Forces of the United States has proudly upheld this long tradition of separating mission from politics,” he added.

Moving forward, the study recommends that the Pentagon scrap the DEI office, but acknowledged that isn’t likely under Biden.

“The surest way to eliminate the concerning trends we have identified, and the growth of race and sex-based scapegoating and stereotyping in the U.S. military, is to altogether end the DEI bureaucracy there,” the study says. “However, until such a time as the executive or legislative branches of the government choose to end the DEI bureaucracy in our federal agencies and military, we are left to advocate the pursuit of alternative avenues that may affect positive change despite existing policies.”

The study’s authors also suggested that the military instead prioritize civic education by focusing on “America’s commitment to freedom and opportunity.”

“The study comes as some branches of the military continue to struggle with recruiting new service members,” The Center Square said.

Many other aspects of Biden’s domestic policies feature far-left “woke” initiatives. For instance, a new Biden administration rule implemented in December 2023 that seeks to withhold lunch money funds from public schools that refuse to accept or comply with new far-left mandates regarding sexuality and gender is likely to outrage parents anew.

As reported by The Center Square at the time, failure to comply with the White House’s leftist school agenda could result in the loss of federal tax funds administered through the Department of Agriculture.

The controversy began after the USDA announced in May 2022 that “it would change its longstanding interpretation of Title IX, the law broadly governing discrimination protections in education,” the outlet reported. “USDA said it would expand its previous prohibition against discriminating based on sex ‘to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.’”

Funding for school lunches goes through the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.

“As a result, state and local agencies, program operators and sponsors that receive funds from FNS must investigate allegations of discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation,” the department said in a statement. “Those organizations must also update their non-discrimination policies and signage to include prohibitions against discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.”
