Critics don’t love Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga.”

The first chapter in what is supposed to be a four-part Western film series is officially out in theaters, and hype around the film has been off the charts.

Given the fact Costner left “Yellowstone” and it’s likely “Horizon” and the production schedule played a role, people are hopeful that it’s worth the sacrifice and hit to Taylor Sheridan’s series. Costner’s new production follows a group of people in “the Old West as the Civil War divides the country.”

The trailers indicate the film will be great, but is it? Not according to critics.

“Horizon: An American Saga” receives bad reviews.

As of publication, “Chapter 1” of the saga holds a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics. For those who might be unfamiliar with Rotten Tomatoes, that’s an abysmal score. A movie has to be *VERY* bad to get a score that low.

“Kevin Costner doesn’t lack for ambition as he sketches this frontier saga across the widest of canvases, but Horizon’s first chapter proves too diffuse in scope for it to satisfy as a self-contained endeavor,” the Critics Consensus reads.

The score from the audience – while not great – is noticeably better. It currently holds a 68% rating after a small handful of reviews from regular people.

I haven’t had a chance to see “Horizon” yet, seeing as how it only just came out, and the content grind is unrelenting. However, I’m 100% to see at the first available chance that pops up.

I’m not sure I’m mentally ready if this movie turns out to be bad. “Yellowstone” fans have had to mentally prepare for a disappointing ending without Costner involved, but the upside has been that he’d provide fans with a great new Western film series.

If the ending of “Yellowstone” is bad and “Horizon” is awful, then fans might be ready to revolt. I’ll be beyond livid.

Hopefully, the critics are wrong, and they often are. We’re in big trouble if they’re correct. Have you already seen the film? Let me know your thoughts without spoiling anything at David.Hookstead@outkick.com.
