The female lead in a James Bond movie has been a coveted role in British cinema for decades, and there has been plenty of speculation about who might follow in the footsteps of the likes of Eva Green, Gemma Arterton, Halle Berry, Britt Ekland, and Ursula Andress.
With the female lead in a Bond film more important than ever, it begs the question – who might portray such a role next?
Gambling.com betting expert, James Leyfield, has provided his odds/analysis on the latest favourites for the big role:
Madame Web, Euphoria and Anyone But You star Sydney Sweeney has been tipped by Entertainment insiders to land a role in the new era of the classic James Bond franchise, after Aaron Taylor-Johnson was all but confirmed to take over the iconic role.
Sweeney Vs Coughlan
“Sydney Sweeney has been in contention for a while, but the star’s price has now been cut to +150. Best known for appearing in the likes of HBO drama series Euphoria and The White Lotus, as well as The Handmaid’s Tale, the actress is now a wanted woman in Hollywood.
She has been racking up the film credits in recent years, including Marvel movie Madame Web and romantic-comedy Anyone but You, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if she added the next Bond movie to her ever-growing career. Another star whose career continues to go from strength to strength is Nicola Coughlan.
The Irish actress rose to prominence in comedy series Derry Girls, but Netflix megahit Bridgerton has put her firmly on the showbiz map. The latest series mainly focused on Coughlan’s character Penelope Bridgerton, and she has essentially become the main star of the series thanks to her alter-ego, gossip columnist Lady Whistledown.
Coughlan is also no stranger to the big screen having appeared in last year’s Barbie movie, and she would be a shrewd signing by Bond bosses. The star is +175 to add a Bond film to her film credits.”
Dua Lipa Could Offer 2-4-1
“Following Sweeney’s price plummet and Coughlan’s arrival in the market, Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer has drifted slightly to +200, from +150, to be the next Bond Girl, while The Gentlemen’s Kaya Scodelario (+300) and Fool Me Once star Michelle Keegan (+350) have also lengthened.
Someone whose odds have gone in the opposite direction is pop megastar Dua Lipa. In January, she was +1400 to be the next Bond Girl, but the Training Season hitmaker is now into +400 sixth favourite for the role, and Bond bosses might even get a two-for-one deal if they recruit her – because she could also perform the theme tune.
Lipa’s stock has certainly risen lately, with the star headlining Glastonbury 2024, and, like Coughlan, she also appeared in Barbie last year, and gained some spy movie experience in 2024 film Argylle.
Another star whose career is on the up is Marisa Abela. The Industry actress was recently praised by critics for portraying Amy Winehouse in the 2024 biopic Back to Black, despite the film appearing to divide opinion.
Abela is +500 to be the next Bond Girl, but will the leading lady role even go to an actress new to the franchise?”
Armas’ Return?
“Ana de Armas is +550 with the bookies to make a shock return to the movie series.
She portrayed Paloma in the latest Bond movie, 2021 film No Time to Die, which was Craig’s last outing as 007, and while the search is on for a new Bond, it doesn’t necessarily have to extend to the female lead, which could pave the way for Armas reprising her role.
Others potential Bond Girls could include Dune actress Zendaya (+600), The Crown’s Meg Bellamy (+650) and Coughlan’s former Bridgerton co-star Phoebe Dynevor (+700). What’s more, British actress Florence Pugh has been cut to +600, from +900, after she was part of hit movie Oppenheimer, which took home seven Oscars earlier this year.”
* Reminder: These are hypothetical odds provided by industry experts.
Sydney Sweeney is still currently 5/2 favourite for the coveted role, whilst Kingsman alumni Colin Firth and Taron Egerton are tipped to join as M and Q, respectively, in what’s shaping up to be an all-star ensemble for the Amazon Studio version’s exciting new chapter.
