Newsom’s family to exit state capital so daughter can attend pricey

Gov. Gavin Newsom is moving his family out of California’s capital city and to an elite Bay Area community so his daughter can attend a private school where the tuition is nearly $60,000 a year.

While the California Democrat and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom have previously had their four children enrolled in private schools as they lived in Sacramento, the latest move is reportedly to allow eldest daughter Montana to begin her freshman year at the Branson School where her mother attended.

“To ensure continuity in their children’s education, the family will split their time between Sacramento and Marin heading into the coming academic year,” Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for the governor, confirmed to Politico.

“The family will return to where Newsom and Siebel Newsom grew up and raised their kids before he was elected governor in 2018. They are currently not looking to rent or purchase a home there, Gardon said,” according to the outlet.

“Newsom and Siebel Newsom attended school in Marin, one of the country’s wealthiest communities with its houseboats, woodsy mansions with sweeping views of Mount Tamalpais and some of the nation’s best hiking trails,” Politico noted. “Newsom went to Redwood, a public high school in Larkspur, and Siebel Newsom attended The Branson School, a private academy in nearby Ross, where her parents own a home.”

While just about 90 miles separate their current home, a six-bedroom property in the suburb of Fair Oaks that the Newsoms will keep, and the new Marin County location, the culture and economy are a world apart.

The median home price in Marin stands at $1.64 million, “nearly double the cost of a home in California, which is more than double the nationwide median-priced home of just over $400,000,” noted Politico.

While Newsom’s name has repeatedly been floated as one to replace President Joe Biden on the Democratic presidential ticket, the governor has opted to play surrogate for the 2024 campaign and will be on hand in Atlanta, Georgia, this week for the first presidential debate. And with his term up in January 2027, there is already speculation that he could be a contender in the 2028 presidential race.

The latest decision to relocate his family out of the capital city “could fuel suspicions from opponents that the ambitious Democrat is already moving on from the job,” Politico noted.

Newsom’s ability to move at will and enroll his children in elite private schools only seemed to widen the chasm between his privileged life and the harsh reality for those living in California. The two-term governor gave a head-scratching State of the State address delivered via social media in which he celebrated the “strong and resilient” Golden State.

Despite the mass exodus of residents out of California amid a $46.8 billion budget deficit, high tax rates, border issues, and explosive growth in homelessness, Newsom celebrated the “weird, wild, free-spirited” state and denounced the “delusional California bashers” in the pre-recorded speech.

“But the California way of life is under attack. For conservatives and delusional California bashers, their success depends on our failure. They want to impeach the very things that have made us successful, as a tactic to turn America toward a darker future,” he declared, warning of similarities to the rise of fascism before World War II.

“That’s us: Weird, wild, free-spirited California. A place that can elect Ronald Reagan and Jerry Brown — back to back. A place for Ayn Rand and Jane Fonda. For Metallica and Kendrick Lamar. A place that can invent the Internet — and the popsicle, blue jeans, and Barbie,” Newsom claimed.

“California is where the most creative people in the world want to be … Anyone who really knows California knows that the state of our state is strong and resilient — a beacon to the world,” he added.
