Former Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle pulled a quick one this week after switching from College Station to Austin to accept the Texas head coaching gig.

Schlossnagle was asked after narrowly missing a College World Series win on Monday whether he’d consider moving on from the Aggies and responded by berating the reporter.

Not long after, Schlossnagle accepted the Texas job, and his impassioned rant completely backfired.

Richard Zane, the TexAgs reporter who was chewed out by Schlossnagle, joined “OutKick Hot Mic” with Jonathan Hutton & Chad Withrow on Wednesday.

Zane gave an emotional response to being targeted by the coach for asking a fair question.

Hutton asked, “What did you make of the reaction from Aggie fans to you for asking the question?”

Zane shared his experience after his interaction with Schlossnagle, and how fans berated him in response.

“For them to come after me full force and have people tell me that I should be fired,” Zane said, “or that I’m terrible at my job and call me every dirty name in the book like that, that had me really upset, to be completely honest with you.

“I didn’t get much sleep Monday night. We had a 12-hour drive back to College Station from Omaha beginning at 5:30 the next morning. So there was a lot of time to be sitting there on my phone and reading everything that was being said about me on Twitter or on our TexAgs forums.”

Coach Schlossnagle later retracted his fiery rant and apologized to Zane during his introductory presser for the Longhorns on Wednesday.

“I want to publicly apologize to Richard Zane from TexAgs,” Schlossnagle said. “He’s a young reporter. He asked the question that was an obvious question. I wish I could have answered that better.

“But in the moment — 30 minutes after the last pitch — all I could think about was our players. “I really wasn’t in the mood to talk about myself or the future. So I apologize for that to Richard.”

To Richard, becoming the subject of ridicule at a program that his family is deeply rooted in led to his profound reaction.

“To be completely honest with you … it hurt me a lot,” he said.

“I went to Texas A&M. My parents both went to Texas A&M. They took me to my first football game when I was five years old in 2002. So I’ve loved this university in this community of people since I was a kid.”
