In what has the makings of a great sci-fi film, a scientist is excited about a concept that would result in footage of an offense playing in the head of a criminal, along with an implant in the brain that would induce emotional states like remorse or regret.

The goal of the mind manipulation is shorter prison sentences — although you can be certain political parties will be paying close attention to a concept that drives emotional responses.

Called Cognify, the design would implant synthetic memories of a person’s crime into their brain, but showing their victim’s perspective.

The system could feature a VR-like device that displays AI-generated footage of the offence, coupled with a brain implant that induces emotional states like remorse or regret – feelings some individuals may not produce on their own.

The concept, developed by Hashem Al-Ghaili, would ensure the long-term effects of the therapy session by making the memories permanent.

There are more than 1.7 million people currently incarcerated in the United States, according to the British tabloid, but multiple studies show that prison does not deter future crimes.

On that note, Al-Ghaili is looking to use artificial intelligence to lower the recidivism rate.

“Cognify could someday create and implant artificial memories directly into the prisoner’s brain,” a narrative video said. “These complex, vivid, and life-like memories are created in real-time using AI-generated content.”

After all, what could go wrong?

“Inside the criminal’s mind, time would pass differently slower than in real life, making them experience years-worth,” the video added, meaning an experience lasting several minutes would seem like years.

Concepts can be designed for different offenses, with AI-generated memories being tailor-made in response to the subject’s crime and sentence.

Prisoners would have to undergo high-resolution brain scans to establish a detailed map of their neural pathways, which would allow Cognify to target specific brain regions responsible for memory, reasoning, and logical thinking, the Daily Mail reported.

Offenders are shown AI-generated memories of their crimes, with the tabloid naming offenses like “domestic violence, hate crimes and discrimination, embezzlement, insider trading, theft, and fraud,” and be subjected to technology that would let them feel the pain and suffering their victim endured.

“Some memories are designed to trigger consequences and trauma,” the video stated. “Such memories could simulate the long-term consequences of violent actions, such as the grief of the victim’s family or the physical and emotional trauma endured by the victim.”

So there you have it. Forget to use someone’s preferred pronouns or vote for Donald Trump and Cognify could have you fixed up and back in step in a jiffy.
