Fans of Yellowstone have been wondering what the hell has been going on with the show since January 2023, when it aired its midseason finale. Yes, MIDseason. Yes, it’s June 2024 as of this writing. There were issues with star Kevin Costner coming back. First it was rumors that his wife wanted him to quit. Then it was he had too much on his plate. There was alleged beef between him and creator Taylor Sheridan. There is an alleged run-off show starring Matthew McConaughey. Who the deuce knows?

You can imagine fans’ excitement when, out of the blue, they announced on Thursday that the show was coming back!

Temper your excitement, because that was Thursday. On Friday, we have this from Kevin Costner. “I’m just not going to be able to continue season 5B or into the future. It was something that really changed me. I loved it, and I know you loved it. And I just wanted to let you know I won’t be returning. And, I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop, and I’ll see you at the movies.”

Well, shit.

So basically, we know Season 5 Part 2 is going to open up with Gov. Dutton having been assassinated, and who did it! Part 1 ended is his half-son Jamie plotting to take him out. I think. I don’t fully remember. That’s the problem with TV in 2024. In the olden days, we would get twenty-two episodes every six months. Now, it is no more than ten episodes every two years or so. I stop caring after a while.

I am, however, excited for a new front in the culture wars because Yellowstone has earned the title “anti-woke.”

You become anti-woke for one of two reasons. The first is that your show doesn’t overtly sh*t all over conservatives, and conservatives enjoy not overtly being sh*t on. The second is that your show doesn’t overtly sh*t all over conservatives, and liberals think it’s weird that it doesn’t.

To the dismay of creator Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone was labeled a “red state” show by people in New York City who hate red states. Case in point: the dinkuses at HBO who passed on the show because it was TOO “middle America” for their sophisticated audience to care about.

You become a “red state show” when you take place in what leftists call “fly-over country,” and use your platform to do something other than validate the progressive agenda. That doesn’t mean the show doesn’t get political. And newsflash: if it gets political, 99% of the time it’s left-leaning because it’s still Hollywood.

But Yellowstone focuses more on compelling characters and storytelling than politics and occasionally shows a progressive ideal in an unflattering light. That’s all it takes for liberal media outlets to call it “a conservative fantasy” or attack it as “Game of Thrones set on a ranch.”

Whether or not the “red state” or “anti-woke” labels are what’s costing the show awards, your guess is as good as mine. Also, your guess is the same as mine.

At this point, there are but two things I want from the series. The first is Rip killing a whole lotta people. The other is awesome country music.
