A while back, a non-binary man who uses “they/them” pronouns went into a LGBTQ club and started shooting. Of course, the media tried really hard to ignore that non-binary part, and the fact that he had visited the club several times as a patron. 👇

But now, justice has come for Mr. Aldrich.

Well, the Justice Department anyway, as they issued a press release celebrating his sentencing.

And I mean, that’s great! The man murdered five people and injured 19 others.

He deserves to go to prison.

But the part of the story that is Not the Bee-worthy is that somehow, in their entire announcement, the Justice Department managed to avoid a single pronoun for Aldrich. Instead, they purposefully and somewhat awkwardly used his last name.

According to the plea agreement, Aldrich admitted to murdering five people, injuring 19, and attempting to murder 26 more in a willful, deliberate, malicious, and premediated attack at Club Q. According to the plea, Aldrich entered Club Q armed with a loaded, privately manufactured assault weapon and began firing. Aldrich continued firing until subdued by patrons of the Club. As part of the plea, Aldrich admitted that this attack was in part motivated because of the actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity of any person.

The announcements include several quotes from people involved in the case that manage to avoid any mention of the man’s preferred pronouns.

‘ATF will not rest until perpetrators like this defendant are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,”‘said Director Steven Dettelbach of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). ‘I hope today’s life sentence brings at least some peace to the victims and survivors of this senseless, horrific tragedy. That this sentence should come during Pride month reinforces how far we have left to go before all communities, including all LGBTQIA+ communities, are safe here. It also shows how far ATF and all our partners will go to ensure hatred does not win.’

Any number of those instances could have used Adrich’s preferred pronouns:

“That they/them’s sentence should come during Pride month…”

See? They’re willing to use this as an opportunity to make it seem like LGBT are oppressed without noting the shooter was LGBT!

Admitting this fact might have made it difficult to make other charges stick, namely the 74 hate crimes that got added onto his tally.

Nor would it fit the continued narrative that this attack was somehow the actions of a right-wing extremist, and not a severely mentally unstable man who bought into the lies of the LGBTQ lifestyle and snapped.

I pray it’s not too late for Aldrich and that someone will share the Gospel with him in prison.
