Fierce backlash over ‘unacceptable’ proposal to force women to sign up

Conservatives have a lot to say about the proposal to force women to sign up for the draft.

Democrats are taking heat for inserting language into the yearly defense authorization bill that would force women, alongside men, to register for the draft when they come of age.

It didn’t take long for Republicans like Sam Brown, a candidate battling Jacky Rosen (D-NV) to bring the issue up in his own race. As a veteran who experienced an IED explosion that left him severely burned, Brown bashed Rosen for voting for the requirement.

“Look at my face. This is the high cost of war,” he said in a video posted to social media. “Amy and I volunteered to serve, and we honor all who serve. But forcing America’s daughters to register for the draft is UNACCEPTABLE. Shame on Jacky Rosen.”

“Look at my face,” he said, pointing to scars. “This is the high cost of war and I just found out that Jacky Rosen voted this week to make signing up for the draft mandatory for our daughters. You’ll be hearing more from me on this.”

Sen. Josh Hawley also took exception to the proposal, saying in no uncertain terms that it is “insane.”

“There shouldn’t be women in the draft. They shouldn’t be forced to serve if they don’t want to,” he told Fox News, going on to accuse Dems of trying to experiment with our military. “Normal people are like ‘leave our daughters alone.’” The senator has already led efforts to remove the language.

Advancing American Freedom, a right-leaning group linked to former Vice President Mike Pence, penned a letter to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Mike Johnson expressing their profound displeasure, saying “the notion of the United States of America requiring women to register to fight our wars is simply untenable and must be opposed at all costs.”

Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), the top-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Forces Committee, vowed to do what he could to strip the language out of the bill.

“I’m opposed to that. I don’t think this is the time to get into a debate on the floor of either house about that. We’re not anywhere near implementing a draft, and to me, it’s a distraction when we need to be talking about real issues that are immediate,” he pointed out. “I hope it will fall out, either on the floor or in conference.”

Democrats are defending the decision with some citing female success in the armed forces and emphasizing that, in the event the draft is required, everyone should have to participate. This was the position of Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jack Reed (D-RI).

“Women are doing a remarkable job in our forces today, and if we were in a situation requiring a draft, I think we would need all able-bodied citizens 18 and above,” he said. “If we go to a draft, that means we’re in a serious, serious situation.”

“It’s not like World War II where we need a lot of infantry. We need cyber experts, we need intelligence analysts, linguists, etc. Wait a second, there are a lot of women out there that can do this better than men,” he added.

It’s still unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will even bring the bill to the floor for a vote before the election.
