Just outside Santiago, the capital of Chile, a train carrying passengers crashed head-on with another train during a test run on Thursday, resulting in at least two fatalities and nine injuries.

The cause of the collision, which completely stacked one on top of another from the opposing train, is now being investigated.

The other train had 10 workers running a speed test, while the eight-car freight train, carrying 1,346 tons of copper, was also filled with passengers, according to the state rail corporation.

The two victims have not been named by the authorities.

Four Chinese nationals were among the nine injured, and they are being treated at medical facilities close to the crash site in San Bernardo, Chile.

“We have to identify what the causes are and take the corresponding measures,” Transportation Minister Juan Carlos Muñoz told The Associated Press.
