A sportsball journalismer asked a silly question about race and got shut down by the NBA coach he asked the question to. I say “sportsball” because, to a lot of journailsmers, the specific sport doesn’t matter as much as using it as a vessel for their niche progressive political agenda. In this instance, the vessel is basketball.

Joe Mazzulla is the coach of the Boston Celtics, who are currently up 2-0 over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. For the sake of this story, both Mazzulla and the coach of the Mavs have a higher melanin content in their skin than I do. For some reason, Yahoo Sportsball reporter Vince Goodwill found having two black coaches interesting. He gave Mazzulla an opportunity to opine on how it made him feel, asking, “Do you take pride in this? How do you view this, or do you not see it at all?”

Turns out, not at all. Mazzulla had a different arbitrary descriptor he wondered about.

“I wonder how many of those have been Christian coaches.”

The question was met with total silence.

Until the next day when Goodwill complained about it, attacking Mazzulla’s “unwillingness” to discuss a “complicated” issue.

“Race is one of the defining issues in this country, and it’s not easy to talk about, but when one avoids it, it adds fuel to an already complicated fire.”

Mazzulla, as a black man, disagrees with it being a defining issue, as do most Americans outside of the journalisming industry. Like Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles when he too coached against another black guy, “Well, when you say ‘you guys’ and ‘look like them’ and ‘grow up like them,’ [you act like] we’re oddballs to begin with. And I think the minute YOU GUYS stop making a big deal out of it, everybody else will as well.”

But again, sports reporting isn’t about sports reporting as much as it is about progressive politics. If it’s not getting upset at a black coach for not wanting to make a basketball game about race, it’s complaining because a hockey team won’t speak out about Jordan Peterson performing at the same arena the team plays at. Or telling an athlete that if they don’t shut up, do what they’re told, and wear the rainbow jersey, they should go back to Russia. Or… *waves hands* Caitlyn Clark.

This isn’t the first time Mazzulla has turned a reporter’s question into one about Christianity. When asked in 2022 if he was excited to meet the “Royal Family,” he said there was only one Royal Family, and neither Prince Andrew nor Meghan Markle was a part of it.
