Guys, we’re still a first-world country, right?

How in the world is a collapse like this possible on American roads? I know, it’s a natural disaster, but this is unreal.

This is insanity.

A mountain pass road near the popular tourist destination of Jackson, Wyoming, collapsed Saturday after a landslide, adding at least an hour of travel time for those who drive on the roadway.

The roadway at milepost 12.8 on Teton Pass “catastrophically failed,” severing a large chunk of the winding road, and will remain closed as officials plan how to repair the damage, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) said.

Wyoming resident Jeremy Carl adds context:

This is disastrous for the state of Wyoming. Much like a bridge collapse, like the one we saw in Baltimore, this will have a massive economic ripple effect. And while I don’t think Pothole Pete Buttigieg is directly to blame for this one, I’m wondering why infrastructure continues to crumble around the nation after we supposedly spent all those tax dollars on roads, bridges, and train tracks.

Fortunately, Wyoming authorities saw this coming, so there was no one on the road at the time of the collapse.

The road was closed at the time of the collapse as crews attempted to address a major crack that split the roadway on Friday and was becoming more pronounced as the land continued to move.

According to KIFI Idaho, a temporary road is being built around the pass while repairs are made.

WYDOT said geologists and engineers are confident they can build the road by using fill material and pave two lanes … WYDOT said they hope to have the detour open in a few weeks with some weight and width restrictions.
