Lindsey Gale was just 33 weeks pregnant when she decided to go on an overnight ferry ride from her home in Newfoundland to Novia Scotia, where her partner was going to help a friend with a roofing job.

Gale told CTVNews,

I said, well, you know what, I may as well come and have a last visit before I can’t travel anymore, before the baby comes.

But their baby apparently didn’t want to be left out of the last hurrah, as Lindsey went into labor during the course of the 7-hour ferry ride.

At first, Gale thought she was experiencing Braxton-Hicks contractions, as she was still 7 weeks away from her expected due date, but during the night the contractions began to become more consistent and she realized that this was the real deal.

Around 4 am, Gale woke up the dad-to-be to let him know what was going on, and along with a friend, they helped her to the ship’s first aid room. Once there, they put a call out for any medical personnel on board to assist in the delivery and two nurses responded.

The captain also did his best to speed the boat up, ultimately leading to it docking 45 minutes ahead of schedule. And not a moment too soon either, as new dad Mason Devoe says that as soon as the ferry docked, emergency medical services rushed on board to help with the delivery, saying,

They were here, and just two minutes and 30 seconds later, little Miley was born. There were times I thought I was going to lose both my girls that day. We’re so grateful that they showed up. They were all so calm, so collected — it was like they knew exactly what to do. I’m so thankful this happened where it did. The care between the paramedics and the NICU here has been incredible. I’m very, very happy it worked out this way.

The tiny 4lb 7oz baby girl was born at 6:59 am Nova Scotia time, 7:29 am Newfoundland time. Since she was born aboard the ferry, it’s not clear exactly which time or birthplace she’ll get to claim.

The mom and baby were taken to a local hospital, where baby Miley had to spend a little extra time as a result of her early arrival, but she is continuing to do well.

The new mom, Lindsey Gale, said,

It’s very fitting that paramedics delivered my baby because I’m a paramedic myself in Newfoundland. I can’t get over how collected the paramedics were. It was phenomenal.
