A desperate attempt to pander to Hispanic voters ended in embarrassment for the Democratic presidential nominee.

The rally in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for Vice President Kamala Harris and her VP nominee Minnesota Governor Tim Walz featured famous Latino celebrities such as Anthony Ramos from “Hamilton” and Liza Colón-Zayas from “The Bear.” While the point of the rally was to bolster Hispanic support for the Democratic side of the ticket, it reportedly didn’t work. The total turnout was somewhere around 1,500 with an estimated 50 Latinos showing up. For the record, the population of Bethlehem is about one-third Hispanic.

Those who did attend the rally expressed their disappointment to the Free Press. Truck driver Luis Gonzalez said, “I thought there would be more Latinos than what I saw.”

“The focus was for the Latino folks. But I didn’t think the turnout was there,” added Gloria Cuadrado, who noted that the rally was scheduled on the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Maria.

Harris campaign Hispanic Media Director Maca Casado stressed that the Latino vote is going to be critical in November in a statement concerning the rally.

“We understand that it’s a tight race and that it’s going to be decided by a few thousand votes in a few states,” Casado said. “The Latino vote is going to be critical.”

Latino support for Harris increased after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, but a Pew Research poll indicates that her current Hispanic support numbers (57%) is still less than the 61% that voted for Biden in 2020.

Likewise, that poll found that former President Donald Trump has increased his support from Latinos from 36% to 39% in the 2024 election cycle.
