Another one of the greats is lost to us:

Actress Dame Maggie Smith, known for the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey, has died at the age of 89, her family has said.

A legend of British stage and screen, she won two Oscars during her career – for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1970 and California Suite in 1979.

In addition to her more well-known works, she was also beloved for her roles in movies such as “Hook,” “Godsford Park” and “The Secret Garden,” among countless other film and television appearances.

The world responded with mourning to the news of her death on Friday:

Notably, Smith died exactly one year after Michael Gambon, who played Albus Dumbledore alongside her in the “Harry Potter” films:
