On Saturday night, a free throw shooting contest will take place in Las Vegas at the NBA Cup semifinals between two of the biggest sports TV personalities: ESPN’s Stephen A Smith and Inside the NBA’s Kenny Smith.

Both of them are native New Yorkers, so you know more respect than usual is on the table. But how did this come to pass?

Smith and his colleagues had been talking trash for weeks about Stephen A. and his basketball skills, or lack thereof – particularly his free throw shooting. During the pregame show of the NBA Cup’s semifinal, bragging rights will be decided. Whoever makes five free throws wins the contest. It’s appropriate since Inside the NBA moves to ESPN starting next season.

Stephen A. obviously is not backing down from the challenge. Check out what he had to say.

Obviously, Smith’s track record of participating in athletic activities and his most recent failure have been well documented. Hopefully, shooting free throws goes a lot smoother than a first pitch. We do not need to re-live that atrocity that occurred at Yankee Stadium last year.

But we’re going to anyway, because it’s hilarious. Watch:

Smith is not immune to being involved in basketball competition, as he was coaching a team of his own during last year’s All Star Celebrity Game. His opponent? Shannon Sharpe.

But here’s the other thing – even if Stephen A’s Pitch Seen Round The World was just a flub, Kenny Smith was a professional basketball player. “The Jet” played a decade in the league, won back-to-back NBA Championships, and has over 9,000 career points.

Oh, and his career free throw percentage is 83%.

Regardless of how this free throw shooting contest turns out between NBA alum Kenny Smith and noodle-arm Stephen A Smith, this is just another memorable moment to add to the history of Inside The NBA. And there are more to come.
