In one of the most bizarre incidents we’ve seen in the NFL this year, San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell straight up left the game against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.

Campbell had been a starter for most of the season prior to the game against the Rams, but lost his starting job due to Dre Greenlaw returning from an injury.

Greenlaw though, was hurt himself in the third quarter, suffering from Achilles tightness and a knee problem. While there was no major issue, the fact that he was coming off an Achilles injury led the team to be cautious.

Campbell was asked to replace him but declined, allegedly indicating he simply did not want to play. Following this, he went back to the locker room.

In the middle of a game. In the third quarter.

De’Vondre Campbell Refused To Play

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the incident involving De’Vondre Campbell.

“Somebody who doesn’t wanna play football, it’s pretty simple,” Shanahan said following the game. “I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so I don’t think we need to talk about that anymore.”

Shanahan went on to suggest the team would strongly be considering cutting the 9-year player.

“I don’t know,” he said when asked about his possible release. “We’ll figure something out.”

Campbell is no slouch, either. Playing for the Green Bay Packers, he was named a first-team member of the 2021 All-Pro Team, becoming the first Packers inside linebacker to achieve the honor since Ray Nitschke in 1966.

He had 146 total tackles that season, 102 of them were solo efforts.

Teammates Were Ticked Off

De’Vondre Campbell’s actions were not looked upon very favorably by his teammates. Cornerback Charvarius Ward absolutely torched his fellow Niner.

“He’s a professional. He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could’ve told me that before the game,” Ward told reporters.

“So I feel like that was some sucker […] that he did. It definitely hurt the team.”

“He’s a professional. He’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could’ve told me that before the game. So I feel like that was some sucker sh*t that he did. It definitely hurt the team.

Outspoken tight end George Kittle hinted that he would like to see Campbell cut over his actions.

“I’ve never been around anybody that’s done that, and I hope I’m never around anyone that does that again,” he stated following the game.

The 49ers have had a very difficult time this season, sitting on a 6-8 record after appearing in last year’s Super Bowl. They lost to the Rams, 12-6.
