Uvalde Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on administrative leave, effective immiedately, according to a report from The Daily Wire. District Superintendent Hal Harrell made the announcement on Wednesday.

“Because of the lack of clarity that remains and the unknown timing of when I will receive the results of the investigations, I have made the decision to place Chief Arredondo on administrative leave effective on this date,” Harrell said in a statement.

Arredondo has faced intense backlash for his handling of the Robb Elementary School mass shooting on May 24th; Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety Steven McCraw called the response an “abject failure.”

“There is compelling evidence that the law enforcement response to the attack at Robb Elementary was an abject failure and antithetical to everything we’ve learned over the last two decades since the Columbine massacre,” McCraw testified. “Three minutes after the suspect entered the west building, there was a sufficient number of armed officers wearing body armor to isolate, distract and neutralize the subject.”

“Surveillance footage shows that police never tried to open a door to two classrooms at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde in the 77 minutes between the time a gunman entered the rooms and massacred 21 people and officers finally breached the door and killed him,” the San Antonio Express-News reported.
