Convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell is dragging former President Bill Clinton and her connections to him in an attempt to have her sentence lessened.
She is et to be sentenced on her conviction on June 28 after being found to be an accomplice of the late convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein, The Daily Mail reported.
She said that her help in getting the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) started showed that she had a “desire to do good in the world.”
In her 77-page filing, she talked about the “history of philanthropy, charitable work, and helping others namely her work with the Clinton Global Initiative.”
“Ms. Maxwell has always worked hard. Her many educational, occupational, and avocational accomplishments include becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), a helicopter pilot, a submersible pilot, a banker; partnering with the Cleveland Clinic to establish a telemedicine platform to enable people in remote areas to obtain quality medical treatment; helping develop the Clinton Global Initiative; supporting a variety non-profit and charitable organizations,” her attorney said.
In another part of the document, it says that Maxwell is not an ‘heiress, villain, or vapid socialite’. She has energy, drive, commitment, a strong work ethic, and a desire to do good in the world. She has supported friends and family through tough times and personal crisis and currently is assisting women in her unit at the MDC,” her attorney said. “She has endeavored to contribute to society….(by) helping launch the Clinton Global Initiative.”
The claim puts a renewed spotlight on the links between Maxwell, Epstein, and Clinton.
Epstein claimed to have helped Clinton launch the CGI and the former President flew on his private jet – known as the ‘Lolita Express’ – dozens of times.
One photo taken as the jet was about to depart shows Maxwell standing with Clinton on the plane’s steps, the two smiling warmly.
The friendship between Epstein, Clinton, and Maxwell dates back to the mid-1990s at least when they were all photographed together at the White House.
Clinton has denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein and said he never visited his private island in the Caribbean as some reports claimed.
The claim about Maxwell being targeted by a sniper was made during a section of the pre-sentencing filing which talked about Maxwell’s treatment in the MDC while awaiting trial.
“The treatment imposed on Ms. Maxwell was unnecessarily and intentionally degrading and threatening,” her attorney said.
“While in isolation, a high-ranking prison guard told Ms. Maxwell that there was concern that she would be shot by a sniper. Putting aside the reason and propriety of dispensing this alarming information, the diminution of security concerns resulting in her transfer to the general population appears correlated to Ms. Maxwell having been sufficiently safeguarded to fill Epstein’s empty seat,” the attorney said.
In April, U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan upheld Maxwell’s conviction even after juror Scotty David was found to have misrepresented himself during pre-trial jury selection.
David’s failure to disclose to the court the fact that he was sexually abused as a child was “highly unfortunate,” Nathan ruled, but it was clearly not “deliberate,” the BBC reported.
“His failure to disclose his prior sexual abuse during the jury selection process was highly unfortunate, but not deliberate. The court further concludes that juror 50 harbored no bias toward the defendant and could serve as a fair and impartial juror,” the judge said, according to the report.
David’s questionnaire answer became an issue after Maxwell’s attorneys noticed that his answer didn’t jibe with his public rhetoric.
In an early January interview with several British news outlets, David “described a moment during the deliberations when he told fellow jurors in Maxwell’s trial that, like some of the victims of the late financier Epstein, he had been sexually abused as a child,” as noted by the AP.
“I know what happened when I was sexually abused. I remember the color of the carpet, the walls. Some of it can be replayed like a video. But I can’t remember all the details, there are some things that run together,” he said in the interview, providing a description of what he told the jury.
In addition, he said that he had also “convinced other jurors that a victim’s imperfect memory of sexual abuse doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”
