Governor Kristi Noem (R-SD) has made an official announcement: abortions have stopped in the state of South Dakota. The New York Times confirmed that the last abortion was performed this week.

“The only clinic in South Dakota, Planned Parenthood in Sioux Falls, which also served patients from North Dakota and Minnesota, performed its last abortion Monday, even though the state has not yet banned it. Abortions at the clinic were already sporadic. A Minnesota doctor flew in around once a month to provide them.”

Noem celebrated the news on Twitter.

“Abortions have stopped in South Dakota. We have prayed for this day, and now it is here,” Noem said on Thursday “Now, we must redouble our focus on taking care of mothers in crisis. Help is available for you. Adoption is an option. You are never alone,” she added.

Noem has made no secret about her administration’s goal to restrict —and end—access to abortion. According to Breitbart News, this “follows Noem signing legislation earlier this year, restricting access to abortifacients. At the time, Noem made it clear that her administration would ‘continue to advance legislation that protects the lives of unborn children.’”
