The primary season for the 2022 midterm elections gets underway in earnest today, with voters in Ohio and Indiana casting ballots to choose their parties’ representatives.
Many observers view the Ohio race to replace outgoing Sen. Rob Portman (R) as a bellwether of former President Donald Trump’s influence in the upcoming cycle. Venture capitalist JD Vance, who also wrote “Hillbilly Elegy,” earned Trump’s endorsement over former state treasurer Josh Mandel and other candidates. Vance saw a double-digit boost in the polls, and enters the day with a 3- to 4-point lead (see averages). The victor appears likely to face current Rep. Tim Ryan (D, OH-13), who has a wide lead in the Democratic primary, in the general election.
