Data Shows Pro-life Law Reduced Abortions by 60% in its First Month

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) celebrated today as data released by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission showed a 60% drop in the number of abortions performed in Texas in the first month after the Heartbeat Act went into effect.

“The data confirms that the Texas Heartbeat Act has saved thousands of lives,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Even greater potential is ahead as we await the Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs case, which could restore the right of all states to modernize our laws and protect unborn children and mothers prior to viability. Seventy-one percent of Americans want far greater limits on abortion than the Court’s precedents currently allow. If the Court finally unshackles the people and their elected representatives, as it should, for the first time in generations they will have the opportunity to enact their consensus in the law and save countless little boys and girls waiting to be born.”

Governor Greg Abbott signed the Heartbeat Act into law last year. The Supreme Court has declined requests to block the law and it remains in effect during litigation. Under Abbott’s leadership, the Texas Legislature also increased funding for the state’s Alternatives to Abortion program by $100 million. The program provides counseling, material assistance, care coordination and housing support.

The Supreme Court has said it will address whether all pre-viability abortion limits are unconstitutional in  Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Court heard oral arguments in the case on December 1, 2021, and a decision is expected by the summer of 2022.

SBA List is a network of 900,000 pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
